Openly By Guntaj Deep Singh

A photo-book by Guntaj Deep Singh & Roshni Riar.

This book is a visual literary experience that goes beyond the often painted picture of pain and trauma when conversations around desi queer folk and their lives take place.

The book is dedicated to those who pave their own path through a kind of confrontation with the moral burdens surrounding them in the cultural and social context somehow become a danger to the system of ‘Love’. In the post-modern world where equal rights movements and related activism are ubiquitous, their freedom lies not in a movement but in the romantic dreams of their own lives. This collection is meant not for idealization, but for a shared revelation and connection.

The subjects photographed are immigrants Guntaj came to know in varying degrees, over the course of 5 years of his time in Vancouver between 2019-2024, who became the source of his inspiration after he watched each of them live through their melancholic rebellions and take charge of their lives.

Through this collaborative project, Guntaj and Roshni intend to take the readers on a visual literary journey that looks more inwards than outwards, uncovering the raw and the unseen of the immigrant queer South-Asian lives in an honest and rare manner.
